STKAM Organized the "Climate Change and Finance Summit in the 100th Year of the Republic"

As part of the "100th Anniversary of the Republic Events," the "Climate Change and Finance Summit in the 100th Year of the Republic" panel was organized by the Marmara University Center for Civil Society Organizations Application and Research (STKAM). The event took place at the Dr. İbrahim Üzümcü Conference Hall on the Göztepe Campus and was attended by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Çelen, STKAM Director Prof. Dr. Esra Yüksel Acı, Dean of the Faculty of Economics Prof. Dr. Sadullah Çelik, faculty members, and students.

In his opening speech, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Mustafa Çelen highlighted the importance of sustainable, resilient, and inclusive development—otherwise known as green transformation—and the role of sustainable finance in mitigating the destructive impacts of climate change. He noted that sustainability has been a focal point for national and international civil society organizations for the past 20 years. Prof. Dr. Çelen pointed out that sustainability initially aimed to raise awareness but has now surpassed that stage. He emphasized that the results of climate change studies may take years to manifest, unlike other fields where outcomes can be seen quickly. He concluded by thanking the guests and participants for attending such a valuable event.

STKAM Director Prof. Dr. Esra Yüksel Acı emphasized the importance of producing innovative solutions to combat the three most significant global risks: climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution-related challenges. She stressed that implementing these solutions with the participation of authorities, stakeholders, and citizens would create more resilient and inclusive societies.

Dean of the Faculty of Economics Prof. Dr. Sadullah Çelik stated that the visible effects of climate change are being experienced today, mentioning the increasing frequency of adverse events such as meteorological disasters, heatwaves, droughts, rising sea levels, and wildfires. He expressed his satisfaction with organizing such a beneficial event in the 100th year of the Republic.

The summit, which addressed the importance of adapting to climate change by 2030, the role of environmental, economic, and social sustainability, and the developments in sustainable finance in Turkey and the world, consisted of two sessions titled "Turkey's Green Transformation from the Perspective of Climate Change" and "Financing Sustainable, Resilient, and Inclusive Development in Turkey." The event concluded with gift presentations and a photo session.
