Maternity and Paternity Policies at Marmara University
Marmara University implements policies that protect and promote maternity and paternity rights in accordance with the legislation of the Republic of Türkiye, aiming to support the balance between work and family life for its employees. These policies are framed by Article 104 of the Civil Servants Law No. 657 and relevant regulations. The University seeks to create a family-friendly working environment that considers the physical, psychological, and social needs of working parents during the pre- and post-natal periods.
Maternity Leave
Female employees are entitled to a total of 16 weeks of paid maternity leave, including 8 weeks before and 8 weeks after childbirth. In the case of multiple pregnancies, two additional weeks are added to the pre-natal leave period. Employees in good health may choose to work up to three weeks before delivery, transferring any unused pre-natal leave to the post-natal period. This arrangement ensures that mothers are supported during their recovery and transition back to work in a healthy and secure manner.
Breastfeeding Leave
After returning to work, female employees with infants under the age of one are granted breastfeeding leave. This leave entitles the mother to three hours per day during the first six months and one and a half hours per day during the following six months. The timing of breastfeeding breaks is determined according to the mother’s preference and is counted as part of working hours. Through this right, the University supports the natural process of motherhood and facilitates the continued participation of mothers in the workforce.
Paternity Leave
Male employees at Marmara University are entitled to 10 days of paid paternity leave when their spouses give birth. This policy encourages fathers to take an active role during the birth process and to provide support to their partners. The University regards paternity leave as a significant social policy that promotes shared parental responsibilities and strengthens family bonds.
Unpaid Leave and Part-Time Work
Female employees may request up to 24 months of unpaid leave following the completion of maternity leave. Additionally, under the Regulation on Part-Time Work Following Maternity or Unpaid Leave, either parent may benefit from part-time or flexible working arrangements until their child begins primary education. This practice helps prevent the disengagement of women from employment after childbirth and supports their sustainable participation in the labor force.
Family-Friendly Institutional Approach and SDG Linkage
Marmara University views its maternity and paternity policies not merely as legal obligations but as integral components of its institutional social responsibility. These practices are directly aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — specifically Goal 5: Gender Equality and Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. By supporting the family life of its employees, the University aims to strengthen gender equality at the institutional level and continuously improve its policies to foster an inclusive and equitable working environment.
